Here in Bogotá chivalry doesn't extend as far as men giving up their seat for you in the bus (although they will sometimes offer it to you before they sit down) but they will offer to hold your bag on their knees. This is very disconcerting for the foreigner who is trained to be untrusting and protective of their belongings in the bus!
